Getting Started

Take a DEEP breath. You CAN do this! I am here to help you. Just take it one paragraph at a time through this post. Once you’ve clicked on the links and understand each paragraph and the posts that are connected to each paragraph, move on to the next step. you got this!

Check out my Video on Surviving Fibro and the protocol.

And totally check out my Facebook Support group for more encouragement and ideas and helpful guidance from admins from all over the world! Here’s the link to that: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Fibro.Buddies.Guaifenesin.Protocol/

Step 1. Check out the Video I made for Step 1 of the Guaifenesin Protocol. First off get the book by Dr St Amand. Click this link for where to find these: Books on the Guaifenesin Protocol and where to find them.  This book will walk you through this whole process so that you get it RIGHT, so that you can get WELL! You do NOT want to mess around with the protocol and end up wasting your time and money.

Book #1 is a must read 🙂 It will encourage and guide you and explain so much about what if fibro and what’s happening in your body <3

  • 1. Dr St Amands Book is “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia”. This book will not only tell you how to follow the guaifenesin protocol, it will tell you the history behind it’s development! It is also the best comprehensive guide to the role fibromyalgia has in our body!! Even if you decide this protocol is not for you, reading this book will help you to better understand why you feel the way you do!! The guaifenesin protocol is not a cure but when followed correctly, it does reverse our symptoms so we can get off of dangerous pain meds and get our lives back!

Optional: Get your doctor involved! Click for steps to making this happen. This is optional, for those of you who are brave and courageous! I didn’t do this, and wish I had, I was just too sick to take it on. NO worries if you are like I was!! Click this: For a list of doctors and mappers we know of who support the protocol. Information to give to your Dr can be found here on Facebook.

Step 2 of the Guaifenesin Protocol Video- Mapping and symptom journal. Get mapped by a reliable, trained mapper and/or start a Symptom Journal so you can look back once you have started the protocol as see where things have improved!

Step 3 Salicylates. This next step is **VERY IMPORTANT** Find those sneaky salicylates that are lurking in your tea(ALL teas have too much sals), gum, mints and dental products.: you will need to check through ALL of your active and inactive ingredients in medications, vitamins, protein powders and dental products as well as ALL your skin products: eye drops, pain creams, flavors, Toothpaste, dental floss(mint), mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, perfume,  any sprays that touch your skin, hair gels, mousse, etc, body wash, hand soap, bubble bath, dish soap for washing by hands (unless you use gloves), DO, antiperspirant, lotion, sunscreen, face wash, face creams, makeup, makeup remover, Razors (aloe strip), shaving cream, nail polish remover, aloe in toilet paper and tissue and anything else you can think of that goes on your skin!

**You must also check for Blue Dye in all your products, this is a new and important part of the protocol. Click the red words for posts with more info.**

At this point, you can either get all your salicyate safe products from Andrea Rose  and skip to this link Finding Your correct Guaifenesin Dosage post. Or follow the rest of this step by step instructions for finding your own sal-safe products!

So, the idea with getting everything out at once, is for someone with very little energy. Once you have them all out, you can SIT while you go through each item. But I know of many people who just replaced one item at a time as they used it up and waited many months before they started the Protocol. NOW, you can either go through each ingredient list on each product, or give the whole lot away to a family member and start from scratch. This will look overwhelming, but you can do it!!

Here’s a super easy way to check your ingredients! Go to this link:  www.salsearch.com and type in your ingredients for each product, click search and it will tell you what is sal safe and what isn’t! SO EASY!!

Did you find my post on How to Find your own Salicylate free products? Check it out, I walk you through the whole process, and have links to the lists to help you, just skip to step 6 if you are getting started and going through your products at home.

What I did, I used my Salicylate Free Ingredient List and checked each and every ingredient, just to be SURE. I sure don’t expect everyone to do that. But for me, it was easier than just sorta skimming through the ingredients and HOPING I got it right. That was just far too stressful for me. I found it mindless work to go through each ingredient in the product list and checking it against my Salicylate free free ingredient list 🙂 (from #7) We didn’t have the salsearch option, or the Pinterest Boards of sal-safe options! You have it MUCH easier than I did when I started 7 years ago!

This will all start to be very natural for you too, I promise! It just takes some time. It really helped me understand what the ingredients were when I when through them that way, now I recognize most ingredient names and what they are without even needing my quick check.

Once you have gone through your items at home, write down what you need to buy, then go to to How to find your own sal-free products and go through all the steps.

Once you have finished all the above steps, now on to: Steps to finding your Correct Guaifenesin Dosage.

**Please note that salicylate sensitivity plays a role in this! My website and support group are VERY sal careful, more so than the guaigroup and the book even! We have found certain things to block the salicylate sensitive people (such as topical butters, gums, certain toothpastes) and want to be extremely cautious with what we say is safe or not. Anybody who is being mapped by Dr St Amand or Dr Congdon is a different story, as they have someone who can help them to know when they are blocking. The rest of us who don’t have mappers have to be SUPER diligent so that we don’t block, since we have nobody to catch it if we do!**
