FAQ: does Fragrance have Salicylates?

Fragrance is an ingredient in many beauty products. It is also broken down into the full list of ingredients contained in the word Fragrance. On a personal note, I go Fragrance free as much as possible, I am just a bit sensitive to smells.

One of the ingredients in your fragrance is Salicylate, but it’s supposed to be OK! YIKES! (but seriously, I personally never chance it, even if it IS supposed to be safe!)

Here’s the deal: Just the β€˜ol’ in a list of fragrance ingredients means it’s a chemical.
These fragrance ingredients are ALL chemical – Fragrance, Benzyl Salicylate (I personally never risk this ingredient in any of my products), Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxyisohexyl 3 Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, Linalool, limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Geraniol. Click for a longer: list of Sal safe ingredients.

If you find Benzyl salicylate near the bottom of the list of ingredients, and having some of these other fragrance ingredients with it, it’s likely just part of the Fragrance list of ingredients and should be fine. If you are ever confused about it, post a pic of your product and we can look it over and tell you if it’s safe πŸ™‚

Benzyl Salicylate – if located higher in ingredient list, will blockΒ your guaifenesin from working to reverse your fibro symptoms. Again, I don’t use a product that has SAL anything in it, no matter where the ingredient is listed.

There are essential oils in alot of fragrances, as the natural oils can be cheaper than the chemical alternative sometimes! Like Lavender! Lavender Essential Oil is super cheap. I never risk using lavender fragrance.

**This ESPECIALLY goes for those of us who like to make our own products. I have spent hours upon hours looking up fragrance ingredients from companies that sell fragrance for diy’ers. I have not found a SINGLE one without alot of sals in there. The difference with our fragrance oils for making products is that they aren’t just concentrated chemicals like the stuff used in huge companies. SO, there’s other things added in there, to make it sound more natural and healthy, like Essential Oils and other carrier oils with lots of sals. PLEASE don’t risk using fragrance in your home-made products!!!!!! I cannot stress this enough, your health is at stake here!**

Don’t stress, this WILL get more and more clear as you go and less and less confusing. You WILL begin to recognize more of the ingredients and it won’t feel like you suddenly have to learn another language, I promise! Just be patient with yourself! Check out my Protocol Vocab post for some help.
