Vitamins, supplements, probiotics and Salicylates

These are in alphabetical order 🙂 Click for more info on Salicylates and the Guaifenesin Protocol

Dr St Amand talks about Vitamins in his book on pages 313- 314. He dosn’t seem to promote the use of vitamins and cautions about them.

Anything with Flavor in it, you will need to call the company and ask to speak to a manager or someone who knows about the ingredient breakdown in the word ‘flavor’. You can’t have Mint/Menthol in it or plant oils like lemon oil, and they often use mint to enhance flavors.

Please take a look at the Salicylate Quick Check for more info on finding sals in products.

Enzymes to aid your digestion are ok, just watch your ingredients, enzymes are ok because they are chemicals extracted from plants. These are ok: Papain, Bromelain, protease, amylase, lipase, lactase, phytase, cellulase, sucrase, and maltase, did I miss any? 🙂

Multivitamins! You can’t have any herbal or plant based stuff in mg amounts, that amount of Salicylate will block your Guaifenesin from working, but the vitamins like B are ok. Sublingual vitamins often have mint/menthol in there, don’t risk those. Make sure to check the Vitamin C in vitamins as it’s usually bioflavanoids (rosehips, Quercetin, Rutin, Hesperiden) and you can’t have those either.

Melatonin is ok, just make sure you don’t use the sub lingual ones with the mint or menth in them. NO MINT please!

Omega Oils: you can only use fish oils for your omega needs, the seed oils, and plant oils will block your Guaifenesin

Probiotics are fine, just be sure that is all that is in there! (Click for post on Probiotics and antibiotics.

Sublingual: In vitamins, the safest option is to NOT use sublingual ones. Think of this like gum or toothpaste, there are very few safe options.
The point of sublingual vitamins is that they sit under your tongue and get absorbed into the blood stream. they will usually put flavor in there, and flavor enhancers (usually mint/menthal.) And the flavors like berries or something, often have a berry oil in there that will block you. If you MUST have sublingual meds, you MUST call the manufacture and get a complete list of ingredients, even the flavor ingredients.

Vitamin C, you can’t have rosehips or Bioflavinoids (Quercetin, Rutin, Hesperiden). You will need to find a basic Calcium Ascorbate for your Vit C.
